access uses the word community to describe the group of people that it is working for whether it be a collection of individuals who are not from the same place but suffer in the same way or if they are literally a community. This word reinforces the understanding that community is a collection of people who have something in common.
Teamwork
The process aims to be inclusive not to be exclusive. access is a facilitating body not a managing organization. For people to own a decision they need to participate in making it and not be passive observers of the process. Everyone has a unique contribution to make and a responsibility to make it. access acknowledges diversity of intelligence, and aims to encompass and encourage (through creativity) those whose potential is not usually fulfilled. It also understands that gifts, skills and talents are valued differently across human culture. Everyone has their own background, experience, perceptions and needs.
The activities that are run focus on collaboration and team building. The importance of this develops as the workshop evolves, sharing and discussing ideas, directing individual expression to form group work. It is a priority that everyone is included throughout a workshop. When appropriate the progress and methodology of the workshops will be shared with the community. It is also important for the group to understand and share their feelings with colleagues and facilitators both during the workshop's progress and especially in the form of feedback at the end of a workshop.
Traditions and myths
access proposes to discuss traditional relationships with the land and the importance of the environment to indigenous cultures. access will highlight how interaction with nature is therapeutic, spiritual, creative and healthy.
Networking and the larger community
It is important to communicate to the client group examples of other communities that have similar concerns to their own, nationally and internationally. access feels that it is meaningful to share and demonstrate other existing projects to make understanding the concept of access more accessible to the group, this will be done by presenting slide shows and videos. access will also encourage appropriate visits from members of other empowered communities and previous projects.
Documentation
access (and when possible its clients) will document its projects and the feedback from the participants. Giving them the voice and ownership of access's progress will empower the clients and create a dialogue between different groups and workshops.
